Warriors to Host Six-Team Stan State Volleyball Tournament, Sept. 12-14
TURLOCK, Calif.--- After starting the season 4-0 at the Sunbird Classic this weekend in Fresno, Calif.,. the Stan State Warriors will host the Second Annual Stan State Volleyball Tournament this Thursday-Saturday, September 12-14 at Fitzpatrick Arena. The five other teams competing this week are Chico State, Dominican, Jessup, Menlo, and UC Merced.
WARRIORS: Stan State lost just three sets during its four matches in Fresno this weekend. The Warriors started with a four-set victory over Fresno Pacific and then defeated Jessup in five sets. They finished with back-to-back sweeps over Academy of Art and Dominican.
Malia Tanksley led the way for the Warriors with 34 kills followed by Isabella Saucedo with 28 and Ellison Weaver and Mariah Iosua each with 25. Haley Burdo paced the Warriors with her 63 assists while Shaelyn Pruiett added 54 assists. Pruiett and Devyn Nifo each recorded a team leading seven service aces followed by Leah Mendoza with six. Leading the Warriors with her 50 digs was Gabby Rawson while Pruiett added 24 digs and Burdo 22. Autumn Kirby leads Stan State with her 12 total blocks followed by Makenna Carrillo with nine and Alex Byrd with eight.
BOBCATS: The Warriors' first opponent at the Stan State Volleyball Tournament will be UC Merced this Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. UC Merced started its season 1-3. The Bobcats defeated Menlo in four sets but lost in three sets to Nebraska-Kearney, Westmont, and Cal State Monterey Bay. Sera Riley paced the Bobcats with 36 kills and Kyra Miller recorded 85 assists. Riley had a team high eight service aces followed by Destiney Lei Ramilo with seven serve aces. Alexa Ultreras leads UCM with her 32 digs while Semiramis Tanasecu has a team leading six total blocks.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series with UC Merced 1-0. The Warriors defeated the Bobcats in four sets in 2015 in Turlock behind Taylor Massengale's 15 kills.
MENLO: The Oaks are 1-3 after their four matches in Seaside. They begin the season with a four-set win over Cal State Monterey Bay and then lost in four sets to UC Merced. Menlo finished the tournament with 3-0 losses to Nebraska-Kearney and Westmont. Hannah Torres has a team leading 52 kills while Paigie Harmann leads the team with her 86 assists. Ayanna Barham leads Menlo with her 44 digs followed by Faith Oiler with 42. Maya Saole'-Su'e has a team high nine blocks.
ALL-TIME SERIES: This is the first ever meeting between the Warriors and the Oaks.
JESSUP: The Warriors are 1-3 after starting the season at the Sunbird Classic in Fresno. Jessup defeated Academy of Art in its final match of the classic, 3-0. In the first three matches, Jessup lost in five to Stan State and Dominican and in three to Fresno Pacific. Madalyn Miller leads the Warriors with her 48 assists followed by Taylor McCuish with 28 kills. Alexis Kepa leads Jessup with her 102 assists. Neena Dimas has recorded a team high 49 digs while Paulina Harris has a team leading eight combined blocks.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series 5-0 in a Battle of the Warriors. In last week's match in Fresno, Stan State won five-sets over Jessup 24-26, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11, and 15-10. Autumn Kirby and Mariah Iosua each had 11 kills to lead the way for Stan State. The Stan State Warriors had eight service aces eld by Shaelyn Pruiett and Devyn Nifo each with three service aces while Haley Burdo added two. Burdo had 19 assists with Pruiett recording 13. Gabby Rawson recorded 19 digs for the victors.
DOMINICAN: The Penguins went 1-2 in their three matches at the classic. They started with a five-set win over Jessup followed by a 3-1 loss to Chico State and a 3-0 loss to the Warriors. Kali Young paces the Penguins with 29 kills followed by Braenwynne Matthews with 27. Camille Rivers recorded 85 assists and Rein Bocage has seven service aces to lead Dominican. Bocage leads the team wither her 52 digs.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series 9-0. The Warriors swept Dominican in three sets (13-25, 20-25, 16-25) in Fresno last week. Malia Tanksley led the way for Stan State with 12 kills while Shaelyn Pruiett had 15 assists and Haley Burdo added 11.

UP NEXT: Stan State will begin CCAA action with two matches on the road. The Warriors will face Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Friday, September 20. They will travel to Atherton, Calif., to face Cal State East Bay on September 21. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. Stan State returns home September 27 when the Warriors host Sonoma State at 5:00 p.m.
