Avila’s Eighth Career Game-Winner Lifts Stan State Past Cal State San Marcos 2–1
TURLOCK, Calif.---The Stanislaus State women's soccer team, receiving votes nationally, earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Cal State San Marcos on Sunday morning at Warrior Stadium. The Warriors struck early, responded to a first-half equalizer, and netted the decisive goal midway through the second half to secure the home win.
With the result, Stan State improved to 6-3-4 overall and 2-2-2 in CCAA play, while Cal State San Marcos dropped to 5-3-4 and 2-2-2. The Warriors are now tied with Cal State San Marcos for sixth place in the CCAA standings as of today, with UC Merced ineligible for postseason play.
First Half
The Warriors wasted no time getting on the board, opening the scoring in the fourth minute when Shauna Johnston converted a pass from Reyna Dismukes for her second goal of the season. The Cougars equalized in the 19th minute through Natalia Huntington, assisted by Gabby Marsh, and the teams entered halftime tied 1–1.
Second Half
Stan State regained control in the second half and produced the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. Senior forward Aliah Avila delivered her eighth career game-winning goal, finishing off a well-placed pass from Olivia Kamm—her second assist of the season—to give the Warriors the lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Goalkeeper Zara Mujica made two second-half saves, and the Warrior defense held strong down the stretch to seal the win.
