Men’s Soccer Begins Season With a Four-Match Road Trip
TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State will begin its 2024 regular season this week with a pair of NCAA Division II West Region non-conference matches in Lacey, Wash. The Warriors will face Saint Martin's at 1:30 p.m. PT this Thursday, Sept. 5. They will finish their trip to Washington with a 11:00 a.m. PT starting match against Simon Fraser this Saturday, Sept. 7.
THE WARRIORS: Stan State went 4-10-4 last season including 1-6-4 in the CCAA. Of their ten losses, six were just by one goal. All-CCAA honoree Sammy Villanueva returns for his junior season after scoring a goal and assisting on two goals. Other top returning scorers include Edgar Castaneda (five goals, three assists), Alecxander Cuellar (one goal, one assist), Leonardo Muniz (two assists), Alexis Ramirez (two assists), Ryan Rosas (one assist), and Kai Perez (one assist).
SAINT MARTIN'S: The Saints finished the 2023 campaign with a 4-8-4 overall record including going 2-6-3 in the GNAC. Xander Koenig returns after scoring four goals including one game-winner and assisting on one goal. Angel Alvarado-Fajardo scored two goals which were both game-winners and assisted on a goal. Returning goalkeeper Connor Leistiko returns after seeing action in two matches.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Stan State leads the all-time series with the Saints 2-1 after defeating Saint Martin's 2-1 in 2023 in Santa Barbara. Tyler Tipton and Edgar Castaneda each scored the Warriors' two goals. Stan State defeated Saint Martin's 1-0 in Lacey, Wash., in 2022. Saint Martin's won the first meeting between the two teams 4-1 in 2019 in Turlock.
SIMON FRASER: The Red Leafs captured the 2023 GNAC regular season title after going 8-2-1 in conference matches. They finished the season with a 11-5-2 record after losing 3-1 to Point Loma in the First Round of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Michael Hennessey returns after being named the 2023 GNAC Freshman of the Year. Hennessey scored 13 goals including four game-winning goals and assisted on four goals. Also back are Koji Poon who scored eight goals including four game-winning goals and recording three assists. Harnish Ogden is back for another season of soccer after scoring three goals and recording an assist.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Simon Fraser leads the all-time series with the Warriors 2-0. The Red Leafs defeated the Warriors 2-1 in Santa Barbara in 2023. Stan State took an early 1-0 lead on a Tyler Tipton goal, but the Red Leafs scored two unanswered goals by Koji Poon to secure the victory. Simon Fraser won the first meeting 2-1 in Hayward in the 2012 NCAA Division II Second Round.
UP NEXT: The Warriors continue their four-match road trip with a pair of matches in Hawai'i, Sept. 12 and 14. They will face Chaminade at noon (HT) on Sept. 12 and Hawai'i Pacific on Sept. 14 at 7pm (HT). The Warriors' home opener is set for 5:00 p.m. (PT) against Fresno Pacific on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
