Warriors Come Up Short After Big Comeback Effort
TURLOCK, Calif.-- After trailing early in their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener this evening, Stan State rallied to tie the match at 2-2, but the visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros scored three unanswered goals to key their 5-2 road win over the Warriors. Sabrina Cabrera and Makeila Yancey scored the hosts' goals with Jocelin Roa and Aliah Avila recorded assists.
FIRST HALF: Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-3-1, 1-0 CCAA) scored the match's first goal in the third minute off a pass from Azalia Salazars. Kellyann Rodriguez had a chance to tie the match in the eighth minute for the hosts, but Kylie Yuzon recorded the save for the Toros. It looked twice in the next ten minutes that the Warriors were going to take the match at 1-1, but both of Sabrina Cabrera's shots went over the goal. The guests doubled their lead, 2-0, in the 23rd minute when Alyssa Edwards connected on a ball from Christine Duarte.
Stan State cut the Toro lead in half in the 25th minute Sabrina Cabrera connected on her second goal for the season on a Jocelin Roa missed shot. Arionna Imhoff had a chance to tie the match at 2-2 for the Warriors with ten minutes left in the half, but Yuzon made another save. The Toros looked like they were going to increase their lead to 3-1, but Natalia Ochoa stopped Angelia Taylor's shot on goal attempt to send the match into the half with the guests leading 2-1.
SECOND HALF: Stan State (3-3-2, 0-1 CCAA) tied the match in the 60th minute when Makeila Yancey scored on a free kick from Aliah Avila. Thirteen minutes later, the Toros retook the lead, 3-2, on a goal by Christine Duarte on a ball from Alyssa Edwards. The guests took a 4-2 lead in the 78th minute on a goal by Alyssa Villabalos off a pass from Cheyenne Dohan. Sabrina Cabrera looked like she was going to cut the deficit for the hosts, but the Toros' keeper stopped the shot on goal attempt. Villabalos scored the Toros' fifth goal in the 88th minute as CSUDH took the 5-2 victory.
CABRERA: Sabrina Cabrera scored her second goal of the season this evening in just four matches. Junior defender Makeila Yancey scored the Warriors' other goal which was her first of the year.
AVILA/ROA: Aliah Avila recorded her third assist of the season to goal with her two goals as she leads the Warriors with seven points. Jocelin Roa is right behind her with five points (two goals, one assist).
UP NEXT: Stan State will host Cal State Los Angeles this Sunday, October 6th at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles defeated Chico State this evening 1-0 in Chico. They scored with less than three minutes left in the match on unassisted goal by Liliana Gonzalez.
