TURLOCK, Calif. — Despite dominating the shot count, Stanislaus State fell just short in a hard-fought 2-1 contest against Simon Fraser on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Stadium. The Warriors outshot the Red Leafs 18-8 and controlled large stretches of play, but a late second-half goal proved to be the difference in a tightly contested match.
First Half
Stanislaus State came out organized and composed in the opening half, limiting Simon Fraser's chances while creating early opportunities of their own. After an initial flurry of shots, the Warriors looked poised to break through, but it was the Red Leafs (0-1-1) who struck first in the 17th minute. Kiera Scott finished a close-range chance following a setup by Kaiden Sherwood to give the visitors a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Second Half
The Warriors (1-1) responded with urgency after the break, turning up the pressure and dictating play for much of the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 59th minute when sophomore Haylee Sousa netted her first collegiate goal, converting a combination play assisted by Aliah Avila and Jocelin Roa to bring the match level at 1-1. With momentum on their side, Stanislaus State continued to push forward and pepper the Simon Fraser goal. However, it was Francesca Rowen who found the winner for the Red Leafs in the 74th minute, finishing a counterattack against the run of play.
