Stellar Defense Lands Yancey FloCollege/CCAA Defensive Player of the Week Nod
TURLOCK, Calif. — Stanislaus State senior defender Makeila Yancey has been named the FloCollege/CCAA Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the California Collegiate Athletic Association announced Monday. This is the second time in her collegiate career that Yancey has earned the weekly honor.
Yancey anchored a stellar defensive effort in two shutout performances last week, helping the Warriors post a 1-0-1 record. In Wednesday's scoreless draw against No. 14-ranked Hawai'i Hilo, Stan State's defense held the Vulcans to just five total shots — only two on goal — and allowed no corner kicks.
She followed up with another strong performance in Saturday's 1-0 win over Menlo, helping limit the Oaks to five shots on goal as the Warriors secured their third shutout of the season. A native of Brentwood, Calif., Yancey played a key role in organizing the backline in both matches.
Through four matches this season, the Warriors are allowing just 0.50 goals per game and have already recorded three shutouts, including back-to-back clean sheets against No. 14 Hawai'i Hilo (0-0) and Menlo (1-0).
Yancey previously received FloCollege/CCAA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29 of last season, when she led Stan State to consecutive shutouts against Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
Stanislaus State (2-1-1) begins a two-match road swing this Saturday, Sept. 20, with a noon kickoff at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif.
