TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State's volleyball team continues their road trip with a second tournament, this time at the Biola/Vanguard Kickoff taking place in Costa Mesa and La Mirada, California. On September 11, the Warriors face Biola University (2-2), followed by Azusa Pacific University (3-0) and Vanguard University (2-1) on September 12, and Texas Permian Basin (1-3) on September 13.
Last Week at the Sunbird Classic
Stan State traveled to Fresno, Calif. to take part in the Sunbird Classic hosted by Fresno Pacific University. The Warriors began their season 0-3, though several members of the team put on strong performances in close matches. The Warriors faced the hosts in their first match of the tournament, dropping the match 3-2. Leah Mendoza was a stalwart presence on defense with 40 digs, tying the program record for most digs in a single match. Maggie Olson led the Warriors' offense with 19 kills, hitting .311 in the match, and Shaelyn Pruiett and Olson earned their first double-doubles of the season. Pruiett had 18 assists and 10 digs while Olson had 19 kills and 11 digs. That evening, Stan State took on Westmont College, falling 3-1. Shaelyn Pruiett posted her second double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs. On September 6, the Warriors were bested 3-0 by Menlo College, though Isabella Saucedo earned her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 14 digs.
Stan State Recap
The Warriors enter this week with a 0-3 overall record. Looking at offense, Isabella Saucedo leads the team with 29 kills, putting her at 2.42 kills per set. Shaelyn Pruiett keeps the offense running with 55 assists, with Leah Mendoza putting up a strong defense at 78 digs. Teagan Irish and Saucedo have three service aces each. Lauren Hamilton leads the team in blocks with 17 and solo blocks with nine.
Seeing Double
Shaelyn Pruiett has already earned two double-doubles in just three games. Pruiett now has eight in her career as a Warrior. Isabella Saucedo and Maggie Olson also recorded a double-double each during the Sunbird Classic, marking the fifth double-double for Saucedo and Olson's first as a Warrior.
Biola University Eagles
Biola University is 2-2 overall heading into the tournament. Madison Moore leads the team in kills with 39, while Hannah Hanson holds the higher hitting percentage at .245 with 33 kills. Hanson also leads the team in assists with 84, followed by Lexi Lambert with 56. On defense, Bri Bellfi is the leader in digs with 76. Simi Kapustova and Hannah Guzzetti defend the net with Kapustova tallying 14 blocks and Guzzetti earning 13. The Warriors and the Eagles have faced each other once before with Biola claiming the win 3-0.
A Look at the Cougars
Azusa Pacific has begun their season 3-0. Jackie Winfield is their key offensive player with 37 kills. Brooklyn Kostoff and Trinitee Carroll run the offense with 51 and 49 assists, respectively. Mia Medrano leads the team in digs with 30 to keep the back line steady while Myla Niksa and Abby McGyre hold the line at the net with five blocks each. Dating back to 2012, the Cougars lead the Warriors in the all-time series 4-0.
Vanguard's Start to the Season
The Lions are 2-1 overall in their first season as a member of NCAA Division II. Adeline Galvanoni leads their offense with 32 kills, followed by Morgan Cole with 30. Macy Kavanaugh is the team leader in assists with 58. Vanguard's defense is led by Morgan Cole with 43 digs and Kayla Robinson with 10 blocks. The Warriors and Lions will be facing each other for the first time on September 12.
Falcons Preview
Texas Permian Basin is coming into the tournament 1-3. Their primary hitter is Ashlee Macias, tallying 38 kills to lead the team. Kierra Freeman is the leader in assists with 74, while the back line is protected by Isabel Rodriguez with 82 digs. Lauren Demuth leads the team in blocks with nine. This will be the first time Stan State takes on Texas Permian Basin.
