No. 13 Stan State Women Take Second at SF State Invitational Without Top Six Runners
SAN FRANCISCO — Led by a strong team effort, the No. 13-ranked Stanislaus State women's cross country team — currently the No. 1 team in the West Region according to the latest USTFCCCA/NCAA Division II rankings — finished second out of 13 teams with 67 points at the SF State Invitational on Friday afternoon at Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadows.
The Warriors put together an impressive performance despite not running their top six runners, showcasing the team's depth and continued improvement heading into the postseason. Crystal Hernandez led the way for Stan State, placing fifth overall in 22:01.2. Tessa Vasquez was close behind in eighth at 22:05.2, followed by Aubrey Webb in 12th (22:25.9), Makenzie Kordic in 19th (22:35.7), and Valorie Jimenez in 26th (22:47.3) to complete the scoring five.
The individual title went to Concordia Irvine's Ania Kapustka, who won the 6K race in 21:44.0.
The Warriors' depth extended beyond the top five, with Bianca Scott (36th, 23:06.1), Noheli Ron (41st, 23:18.0), Roseli Diaz (57th, 23:42.4), and Vanessa Diaz (59th, 23:46.6) also contributing solid performances in the 6K race.
Concordia University Irvine, ranked No. 6 in the West Region, won the team title with 42 points and a total time of 1:50:52.70. The Warriors finished second with 67 points and a total time of 1:51:55.30, while No. 15 Chico State — ranked No. 2 in the region — placed third with 84 points (1:52:30.80).
Stanislaus State also finished ahead of two Division I programs — San José State and Saint Mary's — as well as six West Region teams: Chico State, Cal State East Bay, Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly Humboldt, San Francisco State, and UC Merced.
The meet featured a balanced mix of NCAA Division II and Division I programs, including regional powers and conference rivals. The Warriors held their own against a strong field and gained valuable experience as they prepare for the championship portion of the season.
Stan State will open postseason competition at the CCAA Championships, hosted by Chico State on October 24 at Bidwell Park.
The Warriors will look to advance to nationals for the third time in the last four years and second year in a row. Two weeks later, they will compete at the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships on Saturday, November 8, at Ash Creek Preserve on the campus of Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon, as they aim to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships on November 22 at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
