Men’s Soccer Begins Conference Season at Home against the Toros and No. 3 Golden Eagles

TURLOCK, Calif.---   Stan State returns home this weekend to begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season.  The Warriors will host Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday, October 4 at 4:30 p.m. on Kick Cancer Night.  They will end their weekend this Sunday, October 6 hosting No. 3 Cal State Los Angeles at 11:30 a.m.

1-1 WEEK:  The Warriors went 1-1 this past week to finish their non-conference slate 4-2-1.  They posted their second shutout in three matches with a 2-0 victory at Academy of Art on September 25.  Alecxander Cuellar scored his second goal of the season off a free kick which proved to be the game-winner.  Kenneth Solares recorded his first collegiate goal in the final minutes off a cross from Jacob RamirezAngel Ruiz-Hernandez had five saves in goal for the Warriors en route to his second shutout.  Stan State finished the week with a 2-1 loss at No. 16 Chico State on Saturday evening.  Landon Leal Ruiz scored the Warriors' goal on a double assist from Cuellar and Edgar Castaneda.  They out-shot the Wildcats 9-4 including 6-3 in shot on goal attempts.     

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State begins CCAA play with a 4-2-1 overall record this weekend.  The Warriors are averaging 2.14 goals a game while giving up 1.29 goals a game.  Five Warriors have scored two goals each in Alecxander Cuellar, Jacob Ramirez, Marco Carbajal, Elio Corral, and Adrian YepezEdgar Castaneda leads the team with his four assists followed by Cuellar with three and Kenneth Solares with two.  Cuellar leads the Warriors with his seven points (two goals, three assists) and two game-winning goals.  Ramirez and Yepez have recorded the other game-winning goal. 
 
Angel Ruiz-Hernandez has a 1.29 goals against average in seven matches in goal for Stan State.  The junior keeper has recorded 22 saves with a .710 saves percentage and two shutouts. 
 
RANKED CCAA/NCAA:  Four Warriors are in the top ten in the CCAA in seven statistical categories.  Angel Ruiz-Hernandez is fourth in saves per game (3.14) and tied for fourth in total saves (22) and shutouts (two).  He is also sixth with his 1.29 goals against average.  Cuellar is tied for third with his two game-winning goals while he is fourth in assists (three) and tied for sixth with his seven points.  Edgar Castenada is tied for second with his four assists.  Kenneth Solares is tied for eighth with his two saves.  Castaneda is tenth in the nation in NCAA Division II with his .714 shot accuracy.    
 
TOROS IN REVIEW:  Cal State Dominguez Hills enters its match Friday with the Warriors with a 3-4 record after losing 2-0 at Cal State Los Angeles this past Saturday.  The previous Saturday, the Toros defeated Biola 3-2.  They are averaging 2.14 goals a game while giving up 1.71 goals a game.  Mikey McKibbin leads the Toros with his four goals, five assists, and 15 points.  Gavin Bummer is second on the team with three goals while Ramiro Rosas is second in assists with three.  McKibbin, Rosas, and Logan Kaufman each have scored CSUDH's game-winning goals.  Arturo Magana has posted a 1.87 goals against average with 18 saves and a .600 saves percentage in seven matches.  Kelvin Vargas has seen time in two matches in goal and has a 1.000 saves percentage and a 0.00 goals against average. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  The Toros lead the all-time series with the Warriors 10-4-3.  The two teams have tied their last two matches both in Carson (0-0 in 2023 and 1-1 in 2022).  Stan State's last victory over the Toros was in 2015 in the CCAA Semi-finals in Pomona, Calif.  The Warriors defeated the Toros 3-1 in penalty kicks.  Earlier in the regular season in 2015, Stan State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-0 in Turlock.    
 
GOLDEN EAGLES IN REVIEW: Cal State Los Angeles, who is ranked number three in the nation in the last United Soccer Coaches National Poll, enters its match Friday night at No. 16 Chico State with a 5-0-1 record.  The Golden Eagles have won their last three matches over Colorado School of Mines (4-1), MSU Denver (1-0), and Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-0).  They played to a scoreless draw at Seattle Pacific on September 14.  Cal State Los Angeles is averaging 1.67 goals a game while only giving up 0.17 goals a game.  Diego Bravo has a 0.17 goals against average to go with his .941 saves percentage and 16 saves.  He has posted five shutouts in goal for the Golden Eagles.  Emil Kischka and Andrew Portis leads Cal State Los Angeles with their two goals each.  Tommaso Belli has recorded a team high two assists.  Portis leads the team with his two game-winning goals.   
 
ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series with the Warriors 16-1-2.  The Golden Eagles defeated Stan State 3-2 last season in Los Angeles.  Julian Madrigal and Edgar Castaneda each scored the Warriors' two goals.  Stan State defeated the Golden Eagles 4-0 in 2010 in Turlock.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's match with the Golden Eagles, Stan State will be back on the road for a pair of matches October 11 and 13.  The Warriors will be in Seaside for a 4:30 p.m. match with Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, October 11.  They will finish their road trip in San Francisco for a 11:30 a.m. starting match with San Francisco State.  Stan State will return home on Student Affairs Night on Thursday, October 17 at 4:30 p.m., when the Warriors entertain Cal Poly Humboldt.
