Brenes Scores Twice, Anchors Defense to Earn FloCollege/CCAA Defensive Player of the Week Honors
TURLOCK, Calif. — Stanislaus State's Christian Brenes has been named the FloCollege/CCAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) this afternoon.
This marks the second consecutive week a Stan State player has earned Player of the Week honors. Last week, Emmanuel Duran was recognized as the FloCollege/CCAA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Brenes made an immediate impact for the 14th-ranked Warriors, scoring his first two goals as a Warrior and playing a critical role in back-to-back shutout road wins over Simon Fraser (3-0) and Saint Martin's (4-0). In Thursday's victory over the Red Leafs, the Warrior defense limited SFU to just 10 shots — only two on target — before Brenes capitalized on a turnover and scored with less than seven minutes remaining.
The Vacaville, Calif., native struck again on Saturday, finishing a pass from Hugo Canedo in the 59th minute to help seal the 4-0 result. The defense stayed sharp, holding the Saints to just eight shots (five on goal), as Stan State improved to a perfect 4-0 start.
Through four matches, Brenes has scored two goals — converting both of his shot attempts — and helped anchor a defense that has allowed just two goals while recording two shutouts.
No. 14 Stan State returns to action this Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7:00 p.m., when the Warriors host Menlo College in a non-conference match-up at Warrior Stadium.
