Baseball Splits Series with Golden Eagles

TURLOCK, Calif.----  After taking the first two games of this weekend's four-game series with the visiting Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles, Stan State dropped the last two games including today's series finale 9-4.  Austin Sargent went three-for-five with a run batted in, two runs scored, and a double.

Cal State Los Angeles (7-11, 4-4 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first inning.  Malik Clayton had a lead-off single and went to second when Ben Lee walked.  Still with no one out, Isaiah Marquez drew a bases loaded walk.  With one out, Clayton scored on a single by Cesar Chavez.  The Golden Eagles doubled their lead on a sacrifice fly by Alberto Prado.

The visitors added a run in the top of the fourth on a lead-off solo home run by Kai Penuelas.  Cal State Los Angeles made it 4-0 Golden Eagles on a two-out solo home run by Prado. 

Stan State (10-12, 5-7 CCAA) cut the deficit in half with a two-run sixth inning.  Alex Solis had a lead-off single and went to second on a Flavio Perez ground out.  With two outs, he scored on an Austin Sargent double down the left field line. Sargent scored when Danny Murphy reached on a Golden Eagle error to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 4-2.

The Golden Eagles came back with two insurance runs in the top of the seventh keyed by a lead-off solo home run by Marquez to increase the visitors' lead to 6-2.

Once again, the Warriors came back with a two-run inning this time in the bottom of the eighth.  Tyler Van Dyk drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a Sargent single.  They each advanced a base on a balk.  Van Dyk scored on a one-out single by Jacob Baker.  Stan State made it 6-4 Golden Eagles on a Ryan Leonesio single which brought in Sargent.

Cal State Los Angeles scored three runs in the top of the ninth to increase its lead to 9-4 with Javy Espinoza's one-out two-run double being the key hit of the inning.

Stan State didn't go away without a fight.  Solis had a one-out single and was pinch ran for by JD Madrigal.  With one out, Madrigal went to third on a double by Perez.  Madrigal scored on a sacrifice fly by Van Dyk to cut the Warrior deficit to 9-5.  The Golden Eagles' Ismael Quintero induced the final Warrior to fly out to center field to preserve the 9-4 CSULA victory.

ANOTHER SPLIT:  Stan State split another CCAA four-game series this weekend.  The Warriors took the first two games 5-4 (11) and 8-1 before losing the final two games 5-4 in seven innings and 9-5.  The Warriors other split was with then No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino (Feb. 21-23) at home.  They won games one and three 7-2 and 5-4 of the weekend series with the Yotes and lost games two (7-2) and four (18-11).

MOVIN' ON UP: Alex Solis is now third on the Warrior all-time hit list in the D2ERA of Stan State baseball with 175 career hits.  He has 48 career doubles which is the school record.  Jacob Baker is in a four-way tie in career stolen bases with 34. 

SARGE:  Austin Sargent had three of the Warriors' nine hits today.  He had a double while driving in a run and scoring a run.  Alex Solis had two hits and scored a run for the Warriors. 

THREE: Jacob Baker stole two bases today and Danny Murphy stole a base.  Baker now has eight stolen bases in ten attempts while Murphy is five-for-five.  Ryan Leonesio, Jackson Brooks and Robert Valdivia each have three stolen bases this season.  Luke Davies has two as does Arthur Navarette Jr. Two Warriors have one stolen base this season in Cooper Winton and JD Madrigal.  As a team, the Warriors are 28-for-32 in stolen base attempts.

TEN CAUGHT:  Stan State's opponents have only nine stolen bases in 19 attempt this season.  Danny Murphy threw out a Golden Eagle today in the series finale.

UP NEXT:  The Warriors will travel to San Marcos, Calif., for a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos, March 14-16.  The series will begin with a 3:00 p.m. game this Friday, March 14.  It will continue with a noon starting doubleheader this Saturday.  The series will conclude with a 11:00 a.m. starting game a week from today.  Stan State returns home March 28-30 for a four-game series with San Francisco State.
