Warriors Fall in Series Opener at Cal Poly Pomona
POMONA, Calif.-- After taking an early 2-1 lead after three innings, Stan State lost this weekend's series opener 7-2 this evening to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at Scolinos Field in Pomona, Calif. Arthur Navarette Jr. went two of four for the Warriors. Jonluke Goldman and Flavio Perez each drove in Stan State's runs. Patrick Sweeney pitched 3.1 innings of relief, giving up five hits and a run while striking out two and walking one.
Stan State (11-18, 6-13 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Robert Valdivia had an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jonluke Goldman. Valdivia scored on a two-out double to left center by Flavio Perez. The hosts tied the game with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the second inning by Sebastian Arguelles.
The Warriors retook the lead, 2-1, with a run in the top of the third. Ryan Leonesio reached on a two-base Bronco error to begin the inning. He scored when Valdivia reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice hit.
Cal Poly Pomona (11-23, 8-17 CCAA) used a five-run fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Four of the runs came with two outs including the go-ahead run on a single by Beau Betten. The Broncos added an insurance run in the sixth. Tyler Chaffee had a lead-off single and later scored on a one-out run scoring double by Johnny Pappas.
HITTERS: Stan State's Arthur Navarette Jr. had his team leading tenth multiple-hit game this evening. Navarette went two-for-four as he had two of the Warriors' six hits. The other four came from Robert Valdivia, Flavio Perez, Danny Murphy, and Jacob Baker. Both Navarette and Perez each had a double for the guests.
SWEENEY: In his second relief appearance in less than a week, Patrick Sweeney pitched 3.1 innings, giving up five hits and a run while striking out two and walking one.
UP NEXT: Stan State continues its four-game series with the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. starting doubleheader in Pomona, Calif. The series will conclude with a noon starting game this Sunday, April 6. Stan State returns home a week from this evening, April 11 when the Warriors host Sonoma State at 6:00 p.m. to begin a four-game series at Warrior Field.
