Warriors Finish Four-Game Road Trip Falling to Cal Poly Pomona
POMONA, Calif.-- Stan Sate finished its four-game trip this afternoon with a 67-47 loss to Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Arena in Pomona, Calif. Jeremiah Jones recorded his fifteenth straight game of scoring in double digits with his team leading 16 points.
FIRST HALF: Cal Poly Pomona built a 12-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the game this afternoon. Daniel Ameyaw's jumper capped a 6-2 run in the next four minutes as Stan State tied the game at 14-14. The Broncos (10-6, 5-5 CCAA) came right back with an 8-0 run of its own to take a 22-14 lead keyed by a three by Sam Hunter with 6:45 left in the first twenty minutes of the game. Wiliam Chavarin's free throw with 4:04 on the clock gave Stan State a 24-22 lead. The Broncos came right back and took a 32-28 lead on another Hunter trey with 39 seconds to go in the first half. A four-point play by Jason Zimmer off a pass from Jeremiah Jones tied the game at 32-32 for the visitors heading into the half.
SECORD HALF: Stan State (7-9, 4-6 CCAA) was hoping to feed off the momentum of Jason Zimmer's three that ended the half, but the hosts started the half 15-1 run to begin the half to take a 47-33 lead in the first seven minutes of the new stanza. Three times in the next six minutes, Stan State cut the deficit to 12 including 55-43 on a Jeremiah Jones' lay-up off a Lloyd French assist. That is the closes that the Warriors would get as Cal Poly Pomona took a 65-43 lead and held on for the 67-47 victory.
15 STRAIGHT: Jeremiah Jones scored 16 points for his 15th straight game scoring in double digits this afternoon for the guests. He is averaging 18.3 points per game while shooting 48.6% from the field and 87.2% from the charity stripe. Jones has a 4.1 rebounds per game average to go with his 48 assists and 17 steals.
THREE PERFECT: Stan State was nine-for-13 from the free throw line this afternoon. Three Warriors didn't miss on their attempts from the line in Jeremiah Jones (three-for-three), Jason Cibull (three-for-three), and Jason Zimmer (one-for-one).
FOUR-WAY TIE: Heading into the final week of the first half of the CCAA regular season, Stan State is in a four-way tie for seventh place with Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State East Bay, and San Francisco State. The Warriors are a half-game out of sixth place (Sonoma State) and one game out of fourth place (Cal State Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona). The top six teams at the end of the regular season will earn a berth to the 2024-25 CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Championships, March 6-8, at Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, Calif. The winner of the CCAA Basketball Tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth the NCAA Tournament.
FOUR-GAME HOME STAND: Stan State returns home to The Fitz for a four-game home stand starting this Thursday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. when the Warriors host Sonoma State. A week from today, the Warriors will host Cal State San Marcos at 3:00 p.m. on Jessica's House Appreciation Day on Saturday, January 25. The following week (which will be the beginning of the second half of the CCAA regular season), Stan State will host Cal State East Bay on Thursday, January 30 on Student Affairs Night with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Warriors will conclude the home stand with a 3:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off against San Francisco State on Golden Valley Health Center Day.
