Baseball Returns to Southern California for Four-Game Series at Cal Poly Pomona
TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State returns to Southern California for the final time this regular season for a four-game series in Pomona, Calif., against Cal Poly Pomona, April 4-6. The series opener is set for this Friday, April 4 at 6:00 p.m. The two teams will play a 2:00 p.m. starting doubleheader this Saturday, April 5. They will end the series this Sunday, April 6 at noon.
LAST TIME: Stan State went 1-3 this past weekend at home against San Francisco State. The Warriors lot the series opener 18-0 to the Gators on Friday evening. They came back and took game two, 16-11. Arthur Navarette Jr., had a three-run home run while Ryan Leonesio went three-for-three with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Flavio Perez was four-for-five with three runs scored. Also with three hits was Jonluke Goldman. Patrick Sweeney (1-2) picked up the win with Noah Chelberg pitching 1.2 scoreless innings to record his first save. Stan State lost the final two games 11-2 and 20-7. Three Warriors hit over .350 in Alex Solis (.455), Jonluke Goldman (.429), and Ryan Leonesio (.364). Navarette drove in five runs with Leonesio and Solis each scoring four runs.
WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State enters this weekend with a 11-17 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA. The Warriors are hitting .273 as a team with a .397 slugging percentage and a .369 on-base percentage. They have a 5.98 earned run average with 166 strikeouts. Their fielding percentage is .980. Stan State is 33-for-37 in stolen base attempts.
HITTERS: Seven Warriors are hitting .275 or higher in Ryan Leonesio (.357), Jacob Reyes (.364), Flavio Perez (.304), Alex Solis (.295), Jacob Baker (.294), Arthur Navarette Jr. (.292), and Luke Davies (.283). Leonesio has a team leading .465 on-base percentage and Solis has a team high .476 slugging percentage. Four Warriors have hit three home runs in Perez, Solis, Navarette, and Davies. Solis and Perez are tied for the team lead each with ten doubles with Robert Valdivia leading the way with two triples. Navarette has driven in a team high 18 runs and Solis has scored a team leading 17 runs. Perez leads Stan State with his 34 hits. Jacob Baker has stolen a team leading eight bases with Danny Murphy going seven-for-seven.
PITCHERS: With at least 28 innings pitched, Rocco Gurrola has a team low 4.31 earned run average. Gurrola leads the Warriors with his 30 strikeouts. Cameron Rosen has 25 strikeouts and seven walks. Zach Geiss leads Stan State with his 3-0 record. Three Warriors have two victories in Gurrola, Austin Balentine, and Caleb Bertoncini. Noah Chelberg and Rosen each have recorded the Warriors' two saves.
WALK-OFFS: Stan State has three walk-off victories in its first 28 games. The first came in the Warriors 3-2 victory in ten innings of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 16. Alex Solis had a lead-off double and was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks who then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Flavio Perez. Brooks scored on an Arthur Navarette Jr. infield single to second base. Their second walk-off win was in the night cap of Saturday's February 22 doubleheader with No. 20 CSUSB. With one out, Perez and Luke Davies had back-to-back singles. Danny Murphy pinch ran for Perez and scored on a Jonluke Goldman single up the middle. Their latest one came in the Warriors' 5-4 eleven-inning victory over Cal State Los Angeles. Navarette hit a walk-off single that brought in Jacob Reyes with the game-winning run in the eleventh inning.
SEVENTH IN THE NATION: As a team, the Warriors are second in the nation with their .980 fielding percentage. They are 17th with their 23 sacrifice hits.
CCAA: As a team, Stan State is second in the CCAA with its .980 fielding percentage. The Warriors are tied for second in triples (seven), second in sacrifice hits (23), and fourth in stolen bases (33). Robert Valdivia is tied for fourth with his two triples while Alex Solis and Flavio Perez are tied for ninth each with ten doubles. Jacob Baker is tied for sixth with his eight stolen bases. Ryan Leonesio is eighth with his .466 on-base percentage. Danny Murphy is tied for tenth with his seven stolen bases.
FLOCOLLEGE/CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK: On February 10 as announced by the office of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Stan State's Rocco Gurrola was named the FloCollege/CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Gurrola struck out seven batters and walked no one in the Warriors' 10-2 victory over Saint Martin's on February 8.
ALL-TIME LEADER: Alex Solis is the Warriors' all-time leader with his 49 doubles in his career. He is third with his 181 hits. Solis is seventh with his 96 runs scored and three from moving into sixth place past Kyle Loretelli'09. The senior outfielder is three runs batted in from moving into tenth.
BAKER TIED FOR NINTH: Jacob Baker is in a four-way tie for ninth place with his 34 career stolen bases. He is three stolen bases from moving into seventh place on the Stan State top ten list.
PEREZ TIED FOR NINTH: Flavio Perez's 15 career home runs places him in a four-way tie for ninth place on Stan State's top ten home run list. He is nine runs batted in from moving into the top ten list in RBIs.
ALSO MOVING CLOSER: Three Warriors in Austin Balentine, Ryan Leonesio, and Flavio Perez are moving closer to moving into the top ten lists at Stan State in the D2ERA. Balentine is five victories away from moving into the top ten in the wins list as he is now 12-4 in his career. With his 33 stolen bases, Leonesio is one stolen base from moving into the top ten in stolen bases.
MULTIPLE: Arthur Navarette Jr. has ten multiple-hit games. The duo of Ryan Leonesio and Alex Solis each have nine and the trio of Jacob Baker, Robert Valdivia, and Flavio Perez have eight. Baker has five multiple-RBI games. The trio Valdivia, Perez, and Navarette have four. The duo of Leonesio and Luke Davies has three.
HITTING STREAK: Flavio Perez had his 19-game reached base safely streak and 15-game hitting streak snapped in the Warriors' series finale with SF State on Sunday.
BRONCOS: After splitting its series at Cal State San Marcos, Cal Poly Pomona is 10-23 overall and 7-17 in the CCAA. The Broncos are hitting .280 as a team with a .401 slugging percentage, .371 on-base percentage, and a team earned run average of 5.89. Their fielding percentage is .962. Four hitters are hitting over .300 in Brent Cota (.366), Julian Angulo (.346), Marco Malerba (.333), and Johnny Pappas (.316). Angulo has a team leading 45 hits to go with his team high .508 slugging percentage. Cota has a team leading .500 slugging percentage. Pitching at least 33 innings with his team low 5.87 earned run average is Evan Adolphus.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Since 2008, Cal Poly Pomona leads the all-time series with the Warriors, 35-23. The Broncos swept the series in Turlock, 5-4, 6-4, 9-1, and 8-4, April 6-8, 2024. In 2023, Stan State took three out of four games in 2023 in Pomona. The Warriors lost game one 6-1 and back to win game two 4-2. Alex Solis was two-for-four with a run batted in and two runs scored in the victory. Stan State won the third game 6-1 as Ryan Leonesio scored two of the Warriors' six runs. Stan State took the series finale 6-1. Robert Valdivia, Jacob Baker, and Tyler Van Dyk each had two hits while Leonesio scored two runs. Noah Chelberg pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two.

Prior the first pitch the doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 which is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m., Former Stan State pitcher Andy Stueve'11 will be throwing out the first pitch. He went 20-10 with a 3.33 earned run average. Stueve had 208 strikeouts and 55 walks in 327 innings pitched. He was a two-time All-CCAA honoree including being named to the First Team in 2011.
