Warriors Return Home to Host Cal State Los Angeles in a Four-Game Series, March 7-9

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State returns home this Friday-Sunday, March 7-9 to host Cal State Los Angeles in a four-game CCAA series at Warrior Field.  The series opener will begin this Friday, March 7 with a 6:00 p.m. starting single game.  The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader this Saturday, March 8. They will play the series finale this Sunday, March 9 at noon.  Prior to Saturday's first game of the doubleheader, Stan State Two-Time All-American Pitcher Louie Souza, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.    

LAST WEEK: The Warriors had their first road games of the 2025 regular season as they faced Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series in Carson, Calif.  They lost the first three games of the series 4-0, 4-1, and 5-1 before taking the series finale 15-4.  Stan State hit .269 as a team with four players hitting over .300 in Ryan Leonesio (.500), Arthur Navarette Jr. (357), Flavio Perez (.353), and Robert Valdivia (.353).  Valdivia drove in four runs and Danny Murphy was two-for-two in stolen base attempts.  Caleb Bertoncini picked up the Warrior win on Sunday in relief. 

WARRIORS IN REVIEW:  Stan State enters this weekend's series with an 8-10 record including a 3-5 CCAA record.  The Warriors are hitting .284 as a team with a .421 slugging and a .381 on-base percentage.  They have a .982 fielding percentage.  Stan State is 19-for-23 in stolen base attempts while hitting 13 home runs.  The Warriors' pitching staff has an earned run average of 4.61.  They have 124 strikeouts and 74 walks.    

HITTERS:  Seven Warriors are hitting .275 or higher in Ryan Leonesio (.392), Luke Davies (.357), Arthur Navarette Jr. (.348), Tyler Van Dyk (.317), Jacob Baker (.315), Robert Valdivia (.300), and Flavio Perez (.286).  The trio of Luke Davies, Flavio Perez, and Alex Solis each have hit a team leading three home runs.  Valdivia leads the team with his 12 runs batted in and two triples.  Solis leads Stan State with his seven doubles. Navarette and JD Madrigal each have a team leading 12 runs.  Danny Murphy and Baker each lead the team with their four stolen bases.  Solis leads Stan State with his .500 slugging percentage and Leonesio has a team leading .516 on-base percentage. 

PITCHERS: With at least 18 innings pitched, Austin Balentine has a team low 2.86 earned run average.  The trio of Balentine, Caleb Bertoncini, and Zach Geiss each lead the Warriors with their two victories. Rocco Gurrola leads the Warriors with his 23 strikeouts followed by Cameron Rosen with 17, Balentine with 16, and Bertoncini with 15.  Geiss has ten strikeouts and no walks with Gurrola with 23 strikeouts and just five walks.  Rosen has 17 strikeouts and four walks and Balentine with 16 strikeouts and just seven walks. 

WALK-OFFS:  Already in the young season, Stan State has two walk-off victories.  The first came in the Warriors 3-2 victory in ten innings of Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 16.  Alex Solis had a lead-off double and was pinch ran for by Jackson Brooks who then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Flavio Perez.  Brooks scored on an Arthur Navarette Jr. infield single to second base.  Their second walk-off win was in the night cap of Saturday's February 22 doubleheader with No. 20 CSUSB.  With one out, Perez and Luke Davies had back-to-back singles.  Danny Murphy pinch ran for Perez and scored on a Jonluke Goldman single up the middle. 

NATIONALLY RANKED:  Stan State is second in the nation with its 16 sacrifice hits, 17th in fielding percentage (.983), and 19th in triples (five).  Ryan Leonesio and Robert Valdivia are tied for eighth with eight sacrifice hits.  Valdivia is 10th with his two triples while Alex Solis is 27th with his six doubles.  Leonesio is 42nd in toughest to strikeout.  He has one strikeout with seven walks and three hit by pitches in 39 at bats.    

FLOCOLLEGE/CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:  On February 10 as announced by the office of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Stan State's Rocco Gurrola was named the FloCollege/CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week.  Gurrola struck out seven batters and walked no one in the Warriors' 10-2 victory over Saint Martin's on February 8. 

ALL-TIME LEADER:  Alex Solis is the Warriors' all-time leader with his 47 doubles in his career.  He is fourth with his 169 hits.  Solis is just two runs scored from moving into top ten and three runs batted in from moving into tenth. 

ALSO MOVING CLOSER:  Four Warriors in Jacob Baker, Austin Balentine, Ryan Leonesio, and Flavio Perez are moving closer to moving into the top ten lists at Stan State in the D2ERA.  Baker is five stolen bases from moving into the top ten as he has 30 career stolen bases.  Balentine is five victories away from moving into the top ten in the wins list as he is now 12-4 in his career.  With his 31 stolen bases, Leonesio is four from moving into the top ten in stolen bases.  Perez has 13 career home runs and driven in 78 runs.  Those numbers place him one home runs and 12 runs batted in from moving into tenth.  

MULTIPLE:  Arthur Navarette Jr. has eight multiple-hit games including one five-hit game. Navarette along with Robert Valdivia, Flavio Perez, and Jacob Baker each have a three multiple-RBI games.  Perez has a nine-game hitting streak.  Ryan Leonesio has reached base safely in all 18 Warrior games while Valdivia has reached safely in the last 16 straight games and Perez the last 13. 

GOLDEN EAGLES:  Cal State Dominguez Hills is 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA after splitting with Cal State San Marcos this weekend in Los Angeles.  The Golden Eagles defeated the Cougars in 13 innings, 8-7.  The split the doubleheader on Saturday losing 7-0 and winning 6-0.  They lost the series finale 7-6.  The Golden Eagles are hitting .258 as a team with a .333 slugging and a .355 on-base percentages.  Three players are hitting over .300 in Malik Clayton (.375), Cesar Chavez (.364), and Ben Lee (.342).  Clayton leads the team with his eight runs batted in while Kadyn Victorian has scored a team leading 11 runs.  Their pitching staff has a 5.74 earned run average with Brandon Gutierrez leading the way with a 3.38 earned run average.  Ismael Quintero has a 2-0 record with Lino Zepeda recording a team high 20 strikeouts. 

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series with the Warriors 33-30.  The Warriors took three out of four games from the Golden Eagles last season in Los Angeles (19-5, 8-20, 8-3, 14-9).  In Turlock in 2023, Stan State split with the Golden Eagles losing the first two games 9-4 and 4-2, before taking the final two 2-1 (nine innings) and 10-7.

UP NEXT:  After Sunday's series finale, Stan State will return to Southern California for a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos in San Marcos, Calif.  The series will begin with a 3:00 p.m. starting game on March 14.  The two teams will play a noon starting doubleheader on March 15.  The series will conclude with an 11:00 a.m. series finale on March 16.  Stan State will return home March 28-30 for a four-game series with San Francisco State.
