Warrior Bench Keys 90-79 CCAA Opening Win Over CSUMB
TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State's bench outscored the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters 30-19 to key the Warriors' 90-79 victory in both team's CCAA opener at The Fitzpatrick Arena. Jeremiah Jones had a game high 28 points to go with his four assists, three rebounds, and one steal. Jason Cibull had a season high 19 points off the bench. Daniel Ameyaw had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds with Jason Zimmer chipping in 11 points.
FIRST HALF: Cal State Monterey Bay (2-3, 0-1 CCAA) jumped out to a 7-2 in the first two minutes of the game. Jeremiah Jones' two made free throws capped a 19-4 run by the Warriors as they took a 21-11 lead. The Otters came back and outscored the Warriors 25-12 in the next minutes to take a 36-33 lead. Stan State finished the half outscoring scoring its guests 5-3 as the Warriors cut the deficit to 39-38 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Jaden Tengan's lay-up off a steal increased the Otters' lead to 50-46 five minutes into the new stanza. Cameron Walkers' two free throws tied the game at 52-52 at the 13:22 mark of the second half. CSUMB followed that with a mini 7-2 run to take a 59-54 lead on a Javon Johnson three. A trey by Jeremiah Jones gave the hosts a 75-67 lead as they outscored their guests 21-8. The Otters would not go away as they cut the Warrior lead to 75-72 on a Blake Jones three with 4:49 left in regulation. The Warriors went on a 12-2 run to take an 87-74 lead (its largest of the game) with just 80 seconds left in the game. Stan State (4-3, 1-0 CCAA) held on for the 90-79 victory.
SECOND TIME: Stan State scored 90 points or more for the second this this season in its 90-79 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay. The other time that the Warriors scored 90 points, or more was in a 94-88 victory over Western Oregon on November 15 at the Ron Logsdon Challenge in Rohnert Park.
OFF THE BENCH: Jason Cibuil scored a season high 19 points in 17:48 of action on the court. He went seven-for-ten from the field including a perfect four-for-four from three-point land. He also had a steal and a rebound for the Warriors. Also scoring double figures off the bench was Jason Zimmer with 11 points.
JJ: Jeremiah Jones scored his second game this year of 25 points or more. Earlier this season on November 15 in the Warriors' victory over Western Oregon, Jones scored a career high 33 points. This afternoon, he scored 28 points on 12-for-20 shooting from the field including two-of-five from three-point land. He was two-for-two from the line, grabbed three rebounds, dished out four assists, and had a steal.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Daniel Ameyaw scored a season high 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He was seven-for-12 from the field and two-of-four from the line. He added two blocked shots and a steal in 31 minutes.
FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME: For the fifth straight game, Stan State had more assists than turnovers with 11 assists and only six turnovers. Cameron Walker had four assists with no turnovers. Jeremiah ones had four assists and one turnover while Jonathan Tchengang had two assists with one turnover.
16: Stan State forced 16 turnovers by CSUMB this evening with nine coming on steals. Jonathan Tchengang led the way with three followed by Jason Zimmer with two. Daniel Ameyaw, Jeremiah ones, Jason Cibull, and Fabian Reichstadt each had one steal. The Warriors had 25 points on the 16 turnovers.
FOUR IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Stan State had four players in double digits in points this afternoon led by Jeremiah Jones with his 28 points followed by Jason Cibuill's season high 19 points. Daniel Ameyaw added 16 points and Jason Zimmer chipped in 11 points.
30-19: The Warriors'' bench outscored the Otters' bench 30-19. The thirty points came from Jason Cibuill (19 points) and Jason Zimmer with 11 points.
FIVE-GAME ROAD TRIP: Stan State will finish the calendar year with a five-game road trip beginning with a 7:30 p.m. CCAA game at Cal State Los Angeles on December 5. After facing Cal State Los Angeles, Stan State will be in Carson on December 6 for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills. The following Wednesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m., Stan State will be in San Francisco for an exhibition game with the University of San Francisco. The Warriors will then travel to Seaside, Calif., for a 3:00 p.m. CCAA game with Cal State Monterey Bay on December 21. They will finish out the calendar year the next afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. exhibition game at Sacramento State on December 22. Stan State will return home in the New Year on January 2 for a 7:30 p.m. CCAA game with Cal Poly Humboldt.
