Men’s Basketball Finishes Four-Game Road Trip This Weekend in Inland Empire
TURLOCK, Calif.--- Stan State will finish off its four-game trip this Thursday and Saturday, January 16 and 18 with a pair of conference games in the Inland Empire. The Warriors will face Cal State San Bernardino this Thursday, January 16 for a 7:30 p.m. scheduled contest in San Bernardino. They will finish their road trip in Pomona this Saturday, January 18 with a 3:00 p.m. scheduled contest with Cal Poly Pomona.
LAST WEEK: The Warriors started their road trip going 1-1 in the Bay Area. They started with a 67-55 victory at San Francisco State last Thursday behind Jeremiah Jones' game high 29 points. Jonathan Tchengang added 17 points and Jason Cibull chipped in 11 points. The Warriors held the Gators to just 34% shooting from the field including 35% from three-point land. Stan State ended its weekend with an 82-67 loss at Cal State East Bay on Saturday despite four players scoring in double digits. Tchengang scored a career high 18 points with Jones scoring 15 points. Lloyd French added a season high 14 points off the bench while Cibull scored 12 points.
WARRIORS: Stan State enters this weekend with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-4 CCAA record after splitting their first four games of the calendar 2025 year. The Warriors are averaging 71.1 points per game while giving up 71.2 points per game. They are being outrebounded 35.4 to 33.8. Stan State is forcing 14.3 turnovers per game while recording 6.8 steals per game. Jeremiah Jones leads the way with his 18.9 scoring average, 85.7% shooting from the charity stripe, and 42 assists. Jonathan Tchengang is averaging 9.3 points per game followed by William Chavarin at 8.2 points per game and Daniel Ameyaw at 8.1 points per game. Tchengang leads the team with his 24 steals while Ameyaw is averaging a team high 7.6 rebounds per game and has blocked a team high eight shots. Jason Zimmer is shooting a team leading 55.6% from the field and 53.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Jason Cibull leads the team with his 21 three-point field goals made.
JT WEEKEND: In the Warriors' 1-1 weekend, Jonathan Tchengang averaged 17.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. He shot 54.5% from the field, 57.1% from three-point land while connecting on 77.8% of his attempts from the charity stripe. He started off the weekend scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds in the Warriors' victory at SF State on January 9. Tchengang finished with a career high 18 points and three steals in Stan State's game at Cal State East Bay.
FIVE OF SIX: Stan State is 5-1 when the Warriors score 70 points or more in a game. The Warriors' only loss when they have scored more than 70 points was an 86-83 overtime loss at home to UC Merced. Their five victories are Fresno Pacific (74-62), Western Oregon (94-88), Hawai'i Pacific (75-67), Cal State Monterey Bay (90-79), and Cal Poly Humboldt (72-58). Stan State's two victories when scoring less than 70 points was its 69-68 overtime victory at Cal State Monterey Bay and a 67-55 victory at San Francisco State.
13 and 5 STRAIGHT: Jeremiah Jones has scored in double figures in all thirteen games that he has played in this season. He is averaging 18.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Jones is shooting 49.7% from the field and 85.7% from the line. The senior guard has dished out 42 assists and made 16 treys. Jason Cibull has scored in double digits in his last five games in a row. He is averaging 6.9 points per game while dishing out 33 assists and only turning the ball over nine times in 14 games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Daniel Ameyaw recorded his first double-double and fourth of his career with a 16-point, 11-rebound performance in the Warriors' victory over CSUMB on Nov. 30. He was seven-for-12 from the field and went two-for-four from the line. Ameyaw blocked two shots and added a steal in 31 minutes. For the season, Ameyaw is averaging 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game with a team high eight blocked shots.
CCAA STATS: Stan State is in the top half of the CCAA in seven team statistical categories. The Warriors are third in three-point field goal percentage (34.8%), threes made per game (7.4), and turnover margin (+2.79). They are fourth in field goal percentage defense (44.1%) and fifth in scoring defense (71.2 points per game) and assist/turnover ratio (+1.07). Stan State is sixth with its 33.8 rebounding average.
Six Warriors are in the top ten in ten individual categories. Jeremiah Jones is second in scoring (18.9 points per game) and free throw percentage (85.7%) while he is third with his +1.9 assist/turnover ratio. Jones is fourth in field goal percentage (49.7%) and eighth with his 3.2 assists per game average. Jonathan Tchengang is tied for eighth with his 24 steals and tenth with his 1.7 steals per game average. Jason Cibull is tied for tenth with his 21 treys made and 1.5 threes made per game average. Daniel Ameyaw is fourth with his 7.6 rebounding average. Jason Zimmer and William Chavarin each are tied for tenth with their 1.5 threes made per game average.
UPDATE ON THE COYOTES: Cal State San Bernardino enters this week 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA after losing four of its last six games including both on the road this past weekend to Cal Poly Pomona (80-77) and Chico State (81-67). The Coyotes are averaging 74.5 points per game while giving up 68.1 points per game. They are outrebounding their opponents 34.9 to 32.6. Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Giordan Williams (16.2 ppg), Andrew Henderson (14.0 ppg), and Evan Oliver (13.3 ppg). Charlie Henderson leads the team with his 27 treys made, 89.5% shooting from the line, 6.2 rebounding average, and 20 blocked shots. Williams is shooting a team high 59.9% from the field. Camren Pierce has made a team high 41.7% of his attempts from three-point land. Oliver leads the team with his 81 assists and 35 steals.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CSUSB: Since 2009, Cal State San Bernardino leads the all-time series with the Warriors 20-9 including winning seven of the last eight meetings. The Coyotes swept the series last year winning 72-62 in Turlock on January 20, 2024, and 93-50 in San Bernardino on February 22, 2024. The last Stan State victory was 94-84 in Turlock on January 12, 2023, as Jeremiah Jones had 10 points. The last Warrior victory in San Bernardino was a 97-88 win on February 23, 2019. Andy Cleaves had 28 points and Ty Davis added 25 points and five assists.
BRONCOS IN REVIEW: Entering its Thursday's game at home versus Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal Poly Pomona is 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA after going 1-4 in its last five games. The Broncos went 1-1 this past weekend losing 83-81 in overtime at Chico State and defeating Cal Poly Humboldt 75-69. They are averaging 71.1 points per game while giving up 66.6 points per game. CPP is outrebounding its opponents 34.4 to 33.1. Demarreya Lewis-Cooper is leading the way for CPP with his 13.5 scoring average followed by Shyheim Parm with his 10.6 scoring average. Lewis-Cooper leads the Broncos with his 22 steals, 43.6% shooting from beyond the arc, and 17 treys made. Kevin Simeth is shooting a tea high 53.5% from the field and Sam Hunter has connected on a team high 91.7% of his attempts from the line. Parm leads the team with his 38 assists and Jaden Winfield has blocked a team high eight shots.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. BRONCOS: Since 2010, Cal Poly Pomona leads the all-time series with the Warriors 20-8 with Stan State winning three of the last five meetings. The Broncos swept last year's series 73-64 in Turlock on January 18, 2024, as Daniel Ameyaw had 13 points and 10 rebounds. CPP won 65-64 in Pomona on February 29, 2024, despite Cameron Walker's 11 points and two steals performance. The last Stan State victory was on February 23, 2023, in Pomona, a 70-67 Warrior victory.
