Warriors Start Off Regular Season with 4-1 Road Victory
LACEY, Wash.--- Stan State started off its 2024 regular season with a 4-1 victory over Saint Martin's this afternoon in Lacey, Wash. Four Warriors scored goals for the victors in Marco Carbajal, Adrian Yepez, Sammy Villanueva, and Edgar Castaneda. The Warriors outshot their hosts 21-6 including 13-4 in shot on goal attempts.
FIRST HALF: The visitors had three early chances in the first eleven minutes to take the 1-0 lead including Edgar Castaneda's shot on goal attempt that was stopped by the Saints' Conner Leistiko in the tenth minute. Marco Carbajal put the Warriors on the board first as he connected on a ball from Alecxander Cuellar in the 13th minute. Once again, Stan State had several chances to double its lead in the next twenty minutes. The Warriors doubled their lead, 2-0, on unassisted goa by Adrian Yepez. They took a 3-0 lead with twelve minutes left in the half on a penalty kick goal by Sammy Villanueva.
SECOND HALF: Saint Martin's (0-1) had a couple of chances to cut into the Warrior lead in the first four minutes of the second half, but Angel Ruiz-Hernandez made two of his three saves on the afternoon. Charlie Galvan saw his attempt to increase the Warrior lead be stopped by the Saints' keeper in the 52nd minute. In the 67th minute, Jose Ponce looked like he was going to connect for the visitors' fourth goal of the day, but it was stopped by the Saints' Leistiko. Forty seconds later, Edgar Castaneda connected on a ball from Ponce to give Stan State (1-0) the 4-0 lead.
Landon Leal Ruiz had two chances to increase the Warriors' lead, but both sailed over the top of the goal in the 83rd minute. With less than five minutes left in the match, the Saints scored their only goal which was an unassisted goal by Cole Sullivan to make the final Stan State 4, Saint Martin's 1.
DOMINATION: Stan State outshot the Saints 21-6 including 13-4 in shot on goal attempts. Five of those shot attempts came from Edgar Castaneda while Landon Leal-Ruiz had four shot attempts. Four different Warriors scored goals in Marco Carbajal, Edgar Castaneda, Sammy Villanueva, and Adrian Yepez. Alecxander Cuellar and Jose Ponce each recording an assist.
FIRST W IN GOAL IN THE WARRIOR RED: Junior transfer Angel Ruiz-Hernandez recorded his first win in goal for Stan State this afternoon. Ruiz-Hernandez recorded three saves in 90 minutes.
UP NEXT: Stan State returns to the pitch this Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11:00 a.m. in Lacey, Wash., when the Warriors face Simon Fraser. The Red Leafs are playing Westmont currently in Lacey, Wash. The Warriors will continue their season beginning four-match road trip in Hawai'i, Sept. 12-14. They will face Chaminade (Sept. 12 at noon HT) and Hawai'i Pacific (Sept. 14 at 7pm HT). Both matches will take place in Honolulu. They will have their home opener on Wed., Sept. 18 at 5:00 p.m. against Fresno Pacific.
