Stan State Falls in Series Opener to Otters

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Cal State Monterey Bay took the four-game weekend series opener from the Stan State Warriors 16-2 this evening at Warrior Field.  Luke Davies and Danny Murphy each scored the Warriors' run while Flavio Perez and Ryan Leonesio drove in the runs.  The two teams will continue their season tomorrow with a starting 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.  The series finale is scheduled for this Sunday, April 27 at noon.  Prior to the game at 11:40 a.m., Stan State will recognize its 19 seniors in a pre-game ceremony on the field.

Cal State Monterey Bay (28-14, 21-12 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead after a four-run second inning.  KW Quilici's one-out two-run double was the big hit for the visitors in the second inning.  The Otters added five more runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

Stan State (18-23, 13-18 CCAA) scored one of its two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  With one out, Luke Davies doubled down the left field.  He scored on a two-out Flavio Perez single for the hosts' first run of the game.  The Warriors added another run in their half of the fifth.  Danny Murphy had a one-out single.  He went to second when Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch.  Each base runner stole a base to place runners on second and third.  Murphy scored when Ryan Leonesio grounded out to third to cut the Warrior deficit to 9-2.

The guests added six more runs in the eighth which was started by a two-run home run by Quilici to begin the Otter eighth.  They added another run in the ninth to make the final 16-2 Cal State Monterey Bay.

MOVIN' ON UP: Jacob Baker tied for the career lead in hit by pitches as a Warrior in the D2ERA with 32 with Jacob Keith.  He also stole a base to move into a tie for seventh place with Skippy Ferreira each with 36.  Flavio Perez now has 164 hits in his career as a Warrior which is sixth.  He is tied for tenth with 92 runs batted in with Jason Louis.

UP NEXT:  Stan State continues the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader at Warrior Field.
