CSUSB Uses Late Second Half Run to Key Win Over Warriors
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.--- Stan State was leading the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 40-39 with 8:33 left in regulation, but the Coyotes went on a 13-0 run in the next two minutes to take a 52-40 lead and held on for the 65-52 victory at CSUSB's Coussoulis Arena this evening. The trio of Daniel Ameyaw, Lloyd French, and Jeremiah Jones each scored 12 points to lead the way for the Warriors.
FIRST HALF: Cal State San Bernardino (12-6, 5-4 CCAA) jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Jeremiah Jones' lay-up capped a 6-1 Warrior run off a William Chavarin assist to cut the deficit to 11-8. CSUSB increased its lead to 17-8 on a Charlie Henderson jumper with eight minutes left in the first half. The Warriors outscored the Coyotes 17-7 in the next seven minutes and took a 25-24 lead on a Jason Cibull trey off a Lloyd French pass. On the Coyotes' next possession, CSUSB took a 26-25 lead on a Henderson lay-up. Stan State had a chance to retake the lead heading into the locker room, but Andrew Henderson blocked the Warrior shot attempt as the hosts took a 26-25 lead into the half.
SECOND HALF: A Daniel Ameyaw and a Jason Cibull trey off a Jeremiah Jones' pass gave Stan State (7-8, 4-5 CCAA) a 30-26 in the first two and a half minutes of the new half. A trey by Jordan Jones gave the visitors a 39-38 lead with 9:40 on the clock. Stan State retook the lead for the final time of the game, 40-39, on two Jeremiah Jones' free throws at 8:33 mark of the second half. Evan Oliver's trey capped a 13-0 run by the Coyotes as they took a 52-40 lead with a little under six minutes to go in regulation. Stan State twice cut the deficit to seven in the next minutes including on a Cibull jumper (54-47) with 4:27 to go in the game. CSUSB outscored the Warriors 11-5 to end the game to take the 65-52 victory.
ONCE AGAIN MULTIPLE WARRIORS: Once again, Stan State had three or more players score in double figures this evening. This evening, the trio of Daniel Ameyaw, Lloyd French, and Jeremiah Jones each scored 12 points to lead the way for Stan State. Ameyaw went six-for-ten from the field for the Warriors.
15 STRAIGHT: With his 12 points this evening, Jeremiah Jones continued his streak of scoring in double digits. Jones now has scored in 15 straight games in double digits. This evening, the senior guard was five-for-15 from the field and two-for-two from the line in 36 minutes. He added a season high three steals and three assists. Jason Cibull had streak of scoring in double digits snapped this evening at five. The junior transfer scored eight points.
16 TURNOVERS: Stan State forced 16 turnovers by the Coyotes this evening including nine by steals. Three of those steals came from Jeremiah Jones. Three Warriors had two steals each in William Chavarin, Mahda Fallay, and Lloyd French.
12-10: The Warrior bench outscored CSUSB 's bench 12-10 this evening with all 12 points coming from Lloyd French in 23 minutes. The freshman was five-for-eleven from the field and made one trey. He also grabbed four rebounds which tied his season high and recorded a season high two steals to go with his one assist.
UP NEXT: Stan State finishes its four-game road trip to begin the 2025 calendar year this Saturday, January 18 in Pomona, Calif., as the Warriors take on Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos lost 76-65 this evening to Cal State Monterey Bay at home. After Saturday's game, Stan State will return home to The Fitz to begin a four-game home stand. The Warriors will host Sonoma State a week from this evening at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 23. They will face Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, January 25 at 3:00 p.m. on Jessica's House Appreciation Day. Stan State will finish out its home stand January 30 and February 1 rematches against Cal State East Bay (January 30 at 7:30 p.m.) and San Francisco State (February 1 at 3:00 p.m.).
