Men’s Basketball to Continue Home Stand Hosting Academy of Art and CSUMB

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will continue its three-game home stand this week with a pair of games at The Fitzpatrick Arena.  The Warriors will face Academy of Art this Wednesday, November 27 in a non-conference game.  They will begin CCAA play this Saturday, November 30 when the Warriors entertain Cal State Monterey Bay.  Tip-off times for both afternoons are set for 3:00 p.m.   

LAST GAME:  Stan State lost a heartbreaker 86-83 in overtime in its home opener to UC Merced this past Saturday.  The Warriors lost despite Daniel Ameyaw and William Chavarin recording career highs in scoring.  Ameyaw scored 21 points on eight-for-14 shooting from the field to go with his seven rebounds and one steal.  Chavarin went five-for-seven from the field including four-of-six from three-point land for his 14 points off the bench.  He added three rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Stan State shot 48% from the field and had just nine turnovers. 

WARRIORS:  Stan State enters this week averaging 77.4 points per game while giving up 74.2 points per game.  The Warriors are shooting 46.5% from the field and 34.4% from three-point land.  They are forcing 14.8 turnovers per game while recording 7.0 steals per game.  Jeremiah Jones is averaging a team high 18.8 points per game while Daniel Ameyaw is averaging 10.4 points per game.  Jason Zimmer is shooting a team high 65.2% from the field and 58.8% from three-point land.  Zimmer has made a team leading 10 treys this season.  Mahda Fallay leads the team with his 83.3% shooting from the line.  Jones has dished out a team high 15 assists followed by Jason Cibull with 11.  Jonathan Tchengang leads the team with his ten steals.    

CAREER NIGHTS: Both Daniel Ameyaw and William Chavarin had career games in the Warriors' home opener versus UC Merced.  Ameyaw scored a career high 21 points in 31 minutes.  He was eight-for-14 from the field and made five free throws.  He grabbed seven rebounds to go with his one steal.  Chavarin scored a career high 14 points off the bench for the Warriors.  He went five-of-seven from the field including four-of-six from beyond the arc.  Besides his 14 points, he grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists in 24 minutes.

ONCE AGAIN:  Four of the Warriors' first five games they have turned the ball over nine times are less.  For the season, Stan State is averaging just 8.4 turnovers per game while dishing out 11.8 assists per game. The Warriors have a +1.4 assist to turnover ratio.  Six Warriors have more assists than turnovers this season leading the way is Jeremiah Jones with 15 assists and eight turnovers.  Jason Cibull has eleven assists and one turnover.  Cameron Walker has nine assists with four turnovers followed by Jonathan Tchengang with five assists and one turnover.  William Chavarin has dished out five assists with four turnovers with Jordan Smith dishing out two assists with no turnovers. 

NATIONALLY RANKED:  Stan State is sixth in the nation in NCAA Division II averaging just 8.4 turnovers per game.  The Warriors are 23rd with their +6.4-turnover margin.

CCAA STATS:  As a team, the Warriors are fourth in the CCAA in field goal percentage (46.5%) and fifth in scoring offense (77.4 ppg), scoring margin (+3.2), and three-point field goal percentage (34.4%).  They are sixth in rebounding (33.4 rpg) and sixth in offensive rebounding (10.8 rpg).  Three players are in the top ten in seven categories.  Jeremiah Jones is third in scoring (18.8 ppg), fifth in field goal percentage (57.1%), tied for fifth in assist/turnover ratio (+1.9), and tenth in assists per game (3.01).  Jason Zimmer is first in three-point field goal percentage (58.8%) and sixth in treys made per game (2.0).

COACH TREVOR:  With the Warriors' victory over Hawai'i Pacific on November 16, Coach Paul Trevor has recorded 75 victories during his time on the sidelines at Stan State.  Those 75 victories tie him for fourth most in Warrior men's basketball history with Jim Hanny.  For his 14-year career at Stan State and San Francisco State is 182-178.

URBAN KNIGHTS IN REVIEW:  Academy of Art is 2-3 after losing a pair of games this weekend 76-74 at Saint Martin's and 90-83 in overtime at Western Oregon.  The Urban Knights are averaging 83.2 points per game while giving up 79.4 points per game.  Four players are averaging double digits in scoring in Isaiah Williams (18.0 ppg), Rodney Munson (14.2 ppg), Donovan Vickers (11.8 ppg), and Quintin Metcalf (11.4 ppg). They are shooting 50% from the field and are recording 9.2 steals per game.  Robbie Armbrester leads the team with his 61.8% shooting from the field and Vickers is shooting a team high 45.2% from beyond the arc and 90% from the line. Metcalf leads the team with his 6.6 rebounds per game average.  Treylon Payne has dished out a team leading 17 assists and Munson has recorded a team high 13 steals.  Williams lead the Urban Knights with his four blocked shots.

WARRIORS ADVANTAGE:  Stan State leads the all-time series with Academy of Art since 2008, 4-2.  The Urban Knights defeated the Warriors 81-72 on November 22, 2023, in San Francisco.  Rodney Munson had 13 points for the Urban Knights while Daniel Ameyaw had 10 points for Stan State.  The Warriors defeated Academy of Art 75-69 in Turlock in 2022.

OTTERS IN REVIEW:  Heading into its game this Wednesday at Dominican, Cal State Monterey Bay is 1-2 after losing 75-52 to Colorado Christian in Seaside, Calif., on November 17.  The Otters are averaging 70.7 points per game while giving up 74.0 points per game.  Jaden Tengan leads the way with his 10.7 scoring average followed by Michael Mora at 10.3 points per game.  Blake Jones has dished out a team high 10 assists and grabbed a team leading 7.3 rebounds per game.  Sage Wayans leads the Otters with his 53.8% shooting from the field and Mora is shooting a team high 33% from beyond the arc.  Konner Baroni has blocked a team high six shots while Tengan is shooting a team best 88.9% from the line.

WARRIOR ADVANTAGE:  The Warriors lead the all-time series with the Otters 20-19 since 2001, but CSUMB has won five of the last six meetings.  Stan State snapped its five-game losing streak to the Otters in both teams' regular season finale in 2023-24 in Turlock, 93-85. Jeremiah Jones had 17 points for the victors while Jaden Tengan had 27 points for CSUMB.

UP NEXT:  After hosting CSUMB this Saturday afternoon, Stan State will finish the calendar year with a five-game road trip beginning with a 7:30 p.m. CCAA game at Cal State Los Angeles on December 5.  After facing Cal State Los Angeles, Stan State will be in Carson on December 6 for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The following Wednesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m., Stan State will be in San Francisco for an exhibition game with the University of San Francisco.  The Warriors will then travel to Seaside, Calif., for a 3:00 p.m. CCAA game with Cal State Monterey Bay on December 21.  They will finish out the calendar year the next afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. exhibition game at Sacramento State on December 22. Stan State will return home in the New Year on January 2 for a 7:30 p.m. CCAA game with Cal Poly Humboldt.
