Baseball’s Late Inning Rally Falls Short in Series Opener at Chico State

CHICO, Calif.---  Stan State saw its late inning rally fall short this evening, 9-4, in its series opener at Chico State.  Alex Solis was two-for-three with a solo home run to lead the way for the Warriors. Solis now has 200 hits for his career, which places him third on the Warrior top ten list.  His 15th career home run places him tied for ninth at Stan State. 

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning as Chico State took a 3-0 lead keyed by a one-out two-run single by Thade Miller. 

Stan State (19-26, 14-21 CCAA) cut the deficit to 3-1 on an Alex Solis' one-out solo home run in the top of the fourth.  The Wildcats took advantage of two Warrior errors to take a 4-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. 

Chico State (28-18, 21-16 CCAA) added another run in the fifth to increase its lead to 5-1.  The Wildcats added four more insurance runs in the next two innings to take a 9-1 lead. 

The Warriors made it interesting in their last at bat.  With two outs, JD Madrigal reached on an error.  He advanced on s Flavio Perez single to left field.  Jackson Brooks had a pinch-hit single to load the bases.  Jonluke Goldman drove home Madrigal for Stan State's second run of the game. Stan State cut the deficit to 9-3 when Danny Murphy drew a bases loaded walk which brought in Perez.  Still with the bases loaded, Jacob Baker was hit by a pitch to make the scored Chico State 9-4.

Chico State reliever, Aaron McCurley, came in relief to pitch for the hosts and induced the next Warrior batter to ground out to third to preserve the 9-4 Wildcat victory.

200:  Alex Solis had his 200th hit as a Warrior by going two-for-three this afternoon.  He hit his team leading sixth home run and 15th as a Warrior.  Solis now has 301 total bases after his five today.  The senior outfielder is now first in total bases, third in hits, and tied for ninth in home runs on the Warrior top ten list.

BAKER:  With being hit by a pitch, Jacob Baker is now the all-time leader in hit by pitches with 33. 

UP NEXT:  Stan State will face Chico State in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in Chico, Calif. The series finale is set for noon this Saturday, May 2 in Chico, Calif.
