No.16 Cal Poly Pomona Takes Win in Battle with Stan State
TURLOCK, Calif.--- The Warriors faced Cal Poly Pomona tonight, falling 72-61. Stan State was led by Da'Myiah Lewis with 27 points. Jadyn Patterson put up 12 points and Kalyn Harris chipped in nine points.
FIRST QUARTER: Though Cal Poly Pomona (23-4, 18-3 CCAA) took the lead early, the Warriors kept them to no more than four. About halfway through the quarter, Stan State tied the game and pushed to a lead. The Broncos tipped the score back in their favor, but the Warriors retaliated to take the lead at the end of the period 21-16.
SECOND QUARTER: Stan State (5-22, 4-17 CCAA) pushed their lead to seven with a jumper by Da'Myiah Lewis. Cal Poly Pomona responded with five points, but the Warriors got back out to a five-point lead. The lead began to be traded as the first half came to a close, and the Broncos emerged ahead 38-34 going into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER: The Warriors chipped at Cal Poly Pomona's lead, but a 12-point run by the Broncos put Stan State in a difficult position. With shots from Amya Vangkham-Griffin and Da'Myiah Lewis, the Warriors were able to cut the deficit in half, but Cal Poly Pomona led at the end of three quarters 55-47.
FOURTH QUARTER: The two offenses traded shots, though soon the Warriors struggled to keep up. The Broncos had extended their lead to 21, but Stan State rallied with a 10-point run. The Warriors fell short of Cal Poly Pomona 72-61 at the end of the quarter and the game.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR LEWIS: Da'Myiah Lewis recorded her 11th double-double of her career with 27 points and 10 rebounds in tonight's game.
BALANCED: Two Warriors recorded even assist-to-turnover ratios tonight in Alyssa Premo and Amya Vankgham-Griffin. Each had two assists and two turnovers, while Vangkham-Griffin also recorded three steals and Premo nabbed one. Quinn Garrett had a positive assist to turnover ratio with three assists and two turnovers. Garret also earned a steal.
SENIOR NIGHT: Next Saturday, Stan State will celebrate its seniors in Da'Myiah Lewis and Daja Scott-Mitchell. Da'Myiah Lewis has played for Stan State for three seasons and has recorded over 700 points and 350 rebounds in her career. Daja Scott-Mitchell transferred this fall and has made her mark with five double-doubles this season and 10 games in which she scored double digits.
UP NEXT: Stan State plays its final game of the regular season. On Saturday, March 1st, the Warriors will face Cal State San Bernardino will visit the Fitz as we celebrate Senior Day.
