Chomyn and Peters Tie for First Place; Warriors are Runner-Ups at Battle in the Desert

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif.---  Stan State shot a school record six-under par 282 to finish with a 26-under par 838 at the three-round Battle in the Desert to finish in second place.  The Warrior duo of Jack Peters and Chris Chomyn tied for first place each with a nine-under par 207 at the three-day tournament.  Peters won the three-hole tournament by recording a birdie on the final play-off hole at the par-72 Rams Hill Golf Course.

WARRIORS:  Stan State shot a team score of 26-under par 838 with back-to-back rounds of ten-under par 278 and ended with a six-under par 282 to finish with its 838.  The duo of Jack Peters and Chris Chomyn led the way for the Warriors each with a nine-under par 207. Peters had rounds of 67 (-5), 67 (-5), and 73 (+1) to finish with his 207.  Chomyn had rounds of 71 (-1), 66 (-6), and 70 (-2) to finish with his 207. 
Finishing in a three-way tie for ninth place was Nate Jetton with his six-under par 216.  Jetton began the tournament with back-to-back even pars of 72.  He shot a six-under par 66 to finish with his 216.  Chase Bird finished in a three-way tie for 17th place with his even-par 216 (68-75-73).  Ricky Sullivan shot a seven-over par 223 to finish in a five-way tie for 33rd place.  Sullivan shot back-to-back one-over par 73's followed by his three-over par 75 today.

TEAM: No. 12 Georgia Southwestern captured the Battle in the Desert with its 30-under par 834 (273-286-275) followed by Stan State with its 26-under par 838 (278-278-282).  Finishing in third place with an even-par 864 (279-293-292) was No. 27 UT Tyler.  Four strokes behind UT Tyler were Cal State San Marcos and Lubbock Christian each with a nine-over par 873.  Finishing in a tie for seventh place were No. 26 Cal State Monterey Bay and Western New Mexico each with a ten-over par 874.  Sonoma State, who is 25th in the nation, finished in ninth place with a 14-over par 878 followed by Fort Lewis in tenth place (881).  Rounding out the 12-team tournament field were Cal State Dominguez Hills (898) and Vanguard (927).

TOP TEN INDIVIDUALS:  The Warrior duo of Jack Peters and Chris Chomyn tied for first place each with a nine-under par 207.  Peters captured the third play-off hole to capture medalist honors.  Finishing in a four-way tie for third place each with an eight-under par 208 were Felipe Gomez (Georgia Southwestern), John Kim (Cal State San Bernardino-A), Sam Brown (Georgia Southwestern) and Joao Costa (Georgia Southwestern).  The UT Tyler duo of Jay Shero and Seth Campbell tied for seventh place each with a seven-under par 209.  Nate Jetton tied for ninth with Cal State Monterey Bay's Simon Bjorken and Georgia Southwestern's Nicolas Escobar each with a six-under par 210.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will return to competition, March 10-11, at the 54-hole Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Coria Park in Alameda, Calif.  After that, the Warriors will travel to Arizona to participate in the Spring Break Arizona Invitational #1 (March 22-23, Buckeye, Ariz.) and Spring Break Arizona Invitational #2 (March 24-25, Goodyear, Ariz.). Their final tournament begore CCAA's is set for April 14-15, when they host the 50th Annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Golf & Country Club in Turlock, Calif.
